Everything you need to know about Vaseline Vaseline
Take a look inside any medicine cabinet and you’re sure to find a small jar of Vaseline. Usually hidden in those classic blue containers, Vaseline® Jelly has become a household staple over the years, but how much do you really know about it?

What is Vaseline?
The history of Vaseline begins in 1859, when Robert Chesebrough traveled to Titusville, a small town in Pennsylvania. There, oil workers used cane wax, an unrefined form of Vaseline, then just a byproduct of the drilling they worked on, to treat their skin wounds or burns.
Curious about the healing benefits of Vaseline, young chemist Robert Chesebrough began studying the substance then known as "cane wax." Through various refining and purification processes, he distilled a lighter, clearer gel, which he then patented in 1865 and is the healing Vaseline we know today.

What is Vaseline® Petroleum Jelly?
When people talk about Vaseline, they usually mean Vaseline® Healing Jelly, the product originally refined by Chesebrough.
Originally called "Wonder Jelly," Chesebrough decided to rename the product Vaseline® Jelly, a combination of the German word for water (wasser) and the Greek word for oil (oleon). And so, in 1872, the Vaseline® Jelly brand was born.
